Dairy Systems

Some activities of the Dairy Systems team

Context and ambition

Dairy farming is a major component of sustainable development of both territories and food systems. It is facing many challenges such as market volatility and competitiveness, product quality, workload constraints and environmental impacts. These rapid and generally short-term changes are not easy to anticipate, particularly because dairy production is based on long production cycles and slow genetic evolution (1 year per lactation, 2-6 years of productive life per animal).

The challenge for the Dairy systems team is therefore to provide new approaches and/or short and long-term management strategies for these systems and to propose suitable solutions for farmers to adapt to these changes. The main scientific objective of the team is to determine ways of improving the efficiency of dairy systems at both herd and system levels, to increase feed self-sufficiency and to reduce impacts on the environment, while maintaining competitiveness.

Objectives

  • Describe the multicriteria responses of the dairy herd (lactation / intake / reproduction / growth / health) to management factors, to determine resource-use efficiency from birth up to milk products
  • Optimize grazing on a yearly basis, giving practical references for animal nutrition and pasture management
  • Determine the overall environmental efficiency at the system or territory levels over long periods

Expertise and skills

The complementary expertise of the Dairy systems team members involves various disciplines such as animal production, reproduction, nutrition and digestion of dairy cattle and dairy goats, both for conserved forage and grazing-based feeding systems. It ranges from in vivo experiments (experimental farms of Méjusseaume and Le Pin-au-Haras) to in silico models and tools.
