Genetics and Genomics

Subjects of the Genetics and Genomics team

Context and ambition

Feed resources for livestock become increasingly scarce and are subject to competition, especially with food for human consumption. The efficiency with which an animal uses the feed and its ability to adapt to changing feeding conditions are of paramount importance. It is widely acknowledged that these traits, which have been little improved by selection so far, will be potential targets for genomic selection. Detailed phenotyping and high-throughput genotyping now allow for an in-depth analysis of these complex traits.

In this context, our ambition is to describe the genetic architecture of the traits responsible for the development and mobilisation of energy reserves in poultry (chicken and duck) with particular attention for lipid metabolism. Our work focuses on improving additive models for the prediction of the genetic value of breeding stock by taking into account the effects of gene-gene or gene-environment interactions. Our integrative approach allows for the implementation of three complementary methods of analysis: the study of chromosomes locations affecting traits; the study of gene expression at the RNA level; the exploitation of available knowledge on genomes.
