The Pig in Livestock Systems

Some activities of the Swine Systems team

Context and ambition

As for other economic and agronomic activities, pig production systems have to integrate the various dimension of sustainability. Indeed, the economic viability and competitiveness of the pork chain have to be ensured in a context of high and volatile feed prices, volatile pork prices and international competition. Livestock systems also face an environmental challenge to reduce and control their impact on soil and water quality. In addition to environmental aspects, implications on working conditions of the farmer and animal welfare are part of determinants of the social acceptance of pig production systems.

An important challenge for research in pig farming systems is to propose new systems or to propose ways of how current systems can evolve to ensure sustainability. The ambition of the team "The Pig in Livestock Systems" is to contribute to the development of innovative livestock production systems by creating knowledge at the level of the animal and the production system, with special emphasis on animal welfare and environment, and by developing tools allowing the evaluation or the evolution of pig livestock systems.

Objectives

  • Understand the behaviour of pigs in their environment, and to propose innovative systems with a focus on the relationship between humans and animals, its impact on animal welfare, analysis and understanding of determinants in feeding behaviour, and emotional and cognitive capacities of pigs
  • Develop methods for multicriteria analysis and optimisation of livestock systems taking into account the different dimensions of sustainability, with a focus on the control mechanisms for precision livestock production systems, evaluation of environmental impact, and methods of system optimisation with respect to indicators of performance, environment and economics

  • Nutritional and environmental analysis of systems by experimental procedures, chemical analysis and modelling approaches

  • Development of networks on welfare research in our experimental unit
