Animal houses : associate the control of animal production, and pollutions, through the design of animal houses, the management of animals and effluents, the intensification of byproduct recycling.
  

 

In France, the intensification of animal production allowed to keep agricultural employment, to reduce inputs per produced animal, to improve animal health and meat quality. However, the poor recycling efficiency of excreted nutrients has led to environmental impacts on waters, soils, and air. In other regions of the world, animal breeding also allows to improve agricultural productivity, or to develop other activities (recycling organic wastes, animal power, craft industry, etc.). Now, animal farms can not only keep their economic value. They must also reduce their impacts on waters, their ammonia or greenhouse gas emissions, bad odours or improve animal welfare. The required technical evolutions offer an opportunity to explore the possibilities of developping non-food productions to improve the recycling of the byproducts of animal production.
  

In this context, I am particularly interested in following issues:
  

  • the influence of biological regulations on the determinism of heat production and change of phase or speciation: nature of the causal variables, hierarchy of the variables as a function of process, environment, scale;
  • the development of multidisciplinary experimental studies, in laboratory or commercial conditions, related to the control of animal production systems or to the management of solid or liquid effluents;
  • the optimization of animal productions for food or non-food uses: minimization of solid, liquid and gaseous pollution by maximizing the recycling of byproducts; minimization of energy, water and nutrient inputs at farm scale (reduce ecological footprint on the basis of synergies between  productions).
      

Thanks to various collaborations with colleagues from INRA, other institutions, or R&D, I could get some results related to natural ventilation of animal houses, heat production of animals, manure, and composts, control of gaseous emissions (NH3, N2O) in pig-on-litter or poultry systems, vermifiltration and macrophyte lagooning, modelling evaporative cooling and application to design and audit in commercial poultry houses.
  

  

In the team, we are pleased to welcome foreign researchers or students from various levels and origins. There is an experimental platform where climate, building, animal and effluent management can be reproduced. This original set-up allows a high reproducibility of experiments and offers accurate measurements for model parameterization, factor separation, specification of organic products or production processes including the animals. A regular experimental practice keeps our ability to synthetize knowledge for the anticipation of the evolution of living systems. Validation of hypothesis in commercial farms helps us to be attentive to the farmer concerns.
